MANILA, Philippines - Sending Christmas cards to relatives, friends and loved ones has always been part of the holiday tradition.
Charity work, particularly geared toward less-fortunate kids, is also common during this time of year.
Combining these 2 traditions, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) decided to sell special Christmas cards and gifts aimed at improving the well-being of children.
Aside from classic cards in elegant designs, UNICEF's collection also features contemporary designs such as works of artist Koco, mini cards in playful Christmas symbols, and adhesive gift labels.
It continued, "UNICEF relies entirely on voluntary donations for our work for children -- we receive no core funding from the UN. Donations come from governments, private corporations and individual donors, including those who purchase our cards and gifts.""With a purchase of UNICEF gifts, you can become part of a community of people helping to save, improve and protect the lives of some of the Philippines' most disadvantaged children. Funds go to various education programs that UNICEF Philippines is supporting," UNICEF said in a statement.
UNICEF said all cards are handcrafted and made by socially responsible workshops, and are made from wood and paper from managed forests.
Its suppliers also adhere to workers' rights, particularly the complete prohibition of child labor.
UNICEF Christmas cards are available at all Dash, Hobbes and Landes, and Kidz Station specialty stores, as well as selected outlets of Fully Booked, National Bookstore, Powerbooks and Rustan's Department Store.
