MANILA, Philippines - Fires happen at any time of the year, even during the holiday season due to defective Christmas lights and firecrackers.

This is why the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is on heightened alert nowadays.

And although firemen have committed to respond fast when there is a fire, there is much that the public can do to help avoid fire incidents.

Heed these tips to keep safe, as shared by BFP:

1. Have a fire extinguisher ready. Although it's not a requirement to have in the house, it can be of great help in controlling small fires.

2. Evacuate the family when the fire gets bigger.

"Immediately proceed to evacuation, and then i-account agad 'yung pamilya kung nakalabas lahat," said F/S Supt. Pablito Cordeta, regional director of the BFP-National Capital Region.

3. If trapped in a burning house, drop to the floor and crawl toward the exit to avoid inhaling smoke.

"Ang hindi alam ng marami, meron laging fresh air one foot from the ground," said Cordeta.

4. Open all windows to let the wind in the house, but do not open doors right away as this may give way to back draft or a ball of fire.

"Hawakan niyo muna ang doorknob. Kung masyado ng mainit, don't attempt to open it. Baka biglang pumasok 'yung apoy," said Cordeta.

5. Don't hide in the restroom or a sealed area as firemen may have a hard time rescuing you.

5. Have alternate exit points aside from the main entrance. This may be a window or a fire exit.

6. Conduct a fire drill regularly so family members will not panic and know what to do when a fire occurs.

7. Keep emergency numbers on hand and post these in a place that can be easily seen.

The hotline numbers of the BFP-NCR are: (02) 729-5166; (02) 410-6254; (02) 413-8859; and (02) 407-1230. Emergency calls may also be made to Rescue 117. -- Report from Atom Araullo, ABS-CBN News
