MANILA, Philippines — Local motorsports personality Jose-André Bernard "Kookie" Ramirez succumbed to bladder cancer on Thursday. He was 52.

A report by TopGear.com.ph said Ramirez' wake will begin Friday midnight at Christ the King Parish on Greenmeadows Avenue, White Plains, Quezon City.

Ramirez, son of Philippine race car legend Pocholo Ramirez, played a role in Philippine motorsports by founding the “Run What You Bring” series in 1996. The series helped out amateur race car drivers steer around a track even without racing license.

He also instituted the Kookie Ramirez High Performance Racing School, one of the country’s most prominent racing schools.

The younger Ramirez also raced internationally in 1981 in the Shah Alam Grand Prix and the Malaysian Grand Prix, where he competed against former Top Gear British host Tiff Needell

The Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP) has already conveyed their grief towards Ramirez’s demise.

"AAP is saddened by the death of Kookie Ramirez, who was not only a well-known motorsports figure but also a close associate of the AAP in the governance of local motorsports," said AAP director and motorsports committee chairman Mandy Eduque.

“While we will miss him, we are also happy that he is now past all suffering and that he is now reunited with his father, Pocholo,” he added.

Ramirez has won a number of races in the Philippine Touring Car Championship, an AAP-held tour car series.

Kookie is survived by his wife, Menchie, and children Andre, Stefan and Lorenzo.

His father Pocholo, more known as “Tito Poch,” succumbed to urinary bladder cancer in March 2009.
