THE NATIONAL WATER Resources Board (NWRB) will conduct a study to determine the level and quality of groundwater in Metro Manila.
NWRB Executive Director Vicente S. Paragas said in a recent interview that the agency will coordinate with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) on this project.
"There is a study that we are planning in conjunction with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau to update the data on the availability and quality of the groundwater in Metro Manila," Mr. Paragas said.
"Basically, we will identify possible rechargeable areas of groundwater and assess how much is available," he explained.
The study, estimated to cost around P2-3 million, will be conducted next year, he said.
Current groundwater data being used by the NWRB was last updated in the 1980s. That data showed that Metro Manila’s groundwater then was being replenished by about 20 million cubic meters every year. But Mr. Paragas said that volume is likely to have lessened since then.
Mr. Paragas said that, after NWRB and MGB identify the best places to drill to assess groundwater level and quality, they may seek funding from the Asian Development Bank for the study proper. -- ENJD
