MMDA lifts coding for Yule holidays

By Mike Frialde (The Philippine Star) Updated December 19, 2010

MANILA, Philippines - Motorists in Metro Manila will take a res-pite from the number coding or the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program during the Christmas holidays.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has announced the suspension of the UVVRP on Dec. 24, 27 and 31, and Jan. 1 and 2.

Meanwhile, the MMDA said the “Christmas lanes” have increased travel speed along EDSA from 27.98 kilometers per hour to 32.07 kph.

Travel time from Roxas Boulevard to EDSA has decreased by more than three minutes or from 52 minutes and 40 seconds before the opening of the Christmas lanes to 49 minutes and 24 seconds after the Christmas lanes have become available, the MMDA added.

“This improvement cannot be attributed to the putting up of Christmas lanes alone, but also to the high visibility of our traffic enforcers during this Christmas season and the continuous implementation of the Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program or number coding,” MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said.

Tolentino said the MMDA has deployed additional traffic enforcers to direct private motorists to designated Christmas lanes.

“The MMDA has already put in place necessary contingent measures in response to heavier traffic as Christmas nears. I am hoping the public will cooperate with us on all aspects for their own convenience,” he said.
