By Apples Jalandoni, ABS-CBN NessMANILA, Philippines - Tutuban Mall in Divisoria has partnered with the Department of Tourism (DOT) to launch the shopping area as an official tourist destination.

Tutuban Mall vice-president Stephen Yap said the tourism campaign will put the Philippines and the mall on the world map as a must-visit shopping destination, like the famous night markets in Hong Kong and Bangkok.

The tourism campaign was launched in time for the Bonifacio Day celebration.

Tutuban is the birthplace of hero Andres Bonifacio, father of Philippine Revolution.

Representatives from Tutuban Mall and Tourism Department led a giant Christmas tree lighting ceremony. Singer Ronnie Liang serenaded the crowd with Christmas songs during the event.

There were also performances from Ramon Magsaysay chorale and dance numbers from the Buganda group that is composed of ethnic musicians and fire dancers.

Ding Espiritu, Tutuban Mall senior vice-president, said they will showcase the Tutuban year-round night market as the place to get the best bargain in town.

He thanked former DOT Secretary Gemma Cruz-Araneta, vice-chairman of the Manila Heritage Commission, for gracing the occasion.

A fireworks display was held after the launch.
