MANILA, Philippines – With a promise to win the ASEAN Primary School Sports Olympiad 2010 (APSSO) Chess title, the 4-man Philippine team leaves for Jakarta, Indonesia on Wednesday.
The team, composed of Palarong Pambansa Mandaluyong meet vice-champion Raul "Rhal" Sol Cruz, Daryl Unix Samantila, Marie Antoinette San Diego and Stephen Rome Pangilinan, will see action scheduled on November 4 to 10.
APSSO is an annual sports competition event at elementary level. It was organized by the Ministry of National Education and The Directorate of Kindergarten and Elementary School Education of Indonesia to foster friendship, sportsmanship and respect among fellow athletes at a young age.
Participated by 10 countries composed of Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Brunei and Philippines, the competition includes sporting events like football, table tennis, badminton and athletics.
"We expect these young and talented players to perform well as usual and bring honor to the country," said International Arbiter and National Chess Master Erwin L. Carag, RP head coach.
"Most of these players did very well during the ASEAN age-group chess championships so it will not be a surprise if they will perform just as well in the ASEAN level," added Carag.
