MANILA, Philippines - A company that distributes energy-efficient lighting products hopes to again inspire a green Christmas this year.

Firefly Electric & Lighting Corp. (FELCO) will launch its 75-foot "Firefly Christmas tree" on Saturday, November 6.

The Christmas tree, located at San Miguel by the Bay at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City, will be lighted with 600 pieces of Firefly compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and 47,000 pieces of Firefly LED bulbs.

It will be on display for the public to enjoy for free until January 2011.

"We are excited to once again light up the giant, eco-friendly Firefly Christmas tree to provide Filipino families another opportunity to experience the early Christmas atmosphere this year," said Jhie Greenwood, FELCO marketing manager.

Greenwood added, "Through the Firefly Christmas tree, we hope to be able to spread cheer to our kababayans by creating a venue where Filipino families can bond and enjoy with no extra cost."

Aside from the lighting of the Firefly Christmas Tree, FELCO is also holding a "dance of lights" on Saturday, which will feature performers with "well-lighted behinds."

The company said in a statement that people can also exchange their used or busted incandescent bulbs of any brand for free Firefly CFLs that day.

Christmas, usually characterized by festive decor and lots of food, is observed on December 24 (Christmas Eve) and 25 in most countries. Here in the Philippines, however, celebrations start as early as September 1. (Read story here.)

Because of this, the country has earned the distinction of having the world's longest Christmas season, which lasts for at least 115 days. Festivities usually continue after December 25, and may extend until January of the following year.
