TACLOBAN CITY -- Some P5 billion will be needed to fully rehabilitate the Daniel Z. Romualdez (DZR) Airport here, according to a report of the House of Representatives committee on transportation.
Rep. Neil Benedict A. Montejo of the An Waray party-list group and member of the committee, said the report showed that P900 million-P1 billion is needed to build a new terminal building alone.
DZR was the country’s seventh busiest airport outside Metro Manila in terms of passenger volume, with 830,579 passengers using it, according to 2009 data of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). It ranked behind the Mactan, Davao, Iloilo, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro and Caticlan airports.
Mr. Montejo said the committee had also prioritized two other airports in the region for funding. These are the Maasin Airport in Barangay Panan-awan in Southern Leyte, which needs complete rehabilitation, and Ormoc Airport, which needs navigation aids. "A substantial amount would be needed for these two airports. The committee would still conduct a thorough study of the funding requirements," he said.
Mr. Montejo said the 2011 CAAP budget has funds for an instrument landing system (ILS) to be installed at the airport here. "Within the budget year, it is expected that our airport would already have an ILS." -- R. L. Arinto
