MANILA, Philippines - It may not cost a thing, but for Filipinos, love is the most valuable gift they could give anyone this Christmas.
In a new survey by pollster Social Weather Stations (SWS), more than half (57%) of 1,200 Filipino respondents placed a premium on non-material gifts this holiday season.
Twenty-nine percent of them considered love and affection as the most important Christmas present, followed by family togetherness and family relations at 17%.
Other valued non-material gifts include good health, peace and happiness, trust and better relationships, prayers, and guidance and support.
Meanwhile, 30% of Filipino respondents said they prefer giving material gifts. Topping the list are clothes and shoes at 10%, followed by food and other gifts at 5%.
A handful of them also found money, jewelry, gadgets and household amenities, and toys as important Christmas presents.
A happy Christmas
Nearly 7 out of 10 Filipino respondents (69%) are looking forward to a happy Christmas this year, an improvement from last year's 64%.
SWS noted that the figure breached the "flat 62% to 64%" range it has recorded in the last 6 years.
On the other hand, about 7% said they are expecting a bleak holiday this year, still better than the 10% recorded in 2009, which was a repeat of 2004's all-time high.
Meanwhile, those who think their Christmas would neither be happy or sad dropped to 24% from last year's 26%.
SWS first surveyed Christmas expectations in 2002, when it recorded a happiness peak of 82%. -- abs-cbnNEWS.com, with a report from BusinessWorld
