DOST developing low-cost water filtration technology

By Helen Flores (The Philippine Star) Updated December 29, 2010

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is developing a low-cost water filtration technology to give households in slum areas access to clean, potable water. Science Secretary Mario Montejo said the Industrial Technology Development Institute of the DOST is testing the nanotechnology-based water filtration system.

Montejo said the nanofilter would cost only around P100 to P200.

Bagong Henerasyon party-list Rep. Bernadette Herrera-Dy had said some 17 million Filipinos still do not have access to safe water, and that the present supply of potable water is insufficient to meet the needs of the growing population.

At the present supply level, the country would achieve only 82 percent of the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of sustainable water supply by 2015.

Recently, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) reported that around 1.5 million households outside Metro Manila have no access to potable water.

These households are located in municipalities experiencing less than 50 percent water service coverage.

Citing the Philippine Water Supply Sector Roadmap, DILG said most of these municipalities experiencing shortage of water supply are in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (75), Western Visayas (74), Central Visayas (36), and Zamboanga (34).
