MANILA, Philippines – A Manila judge rejected yesterday a motion of fugitive Sen. Panfilo Lacson to reinvestigate the two counts of murder charges against him for the killing of publicist Salvador Dacer and his driver, Emmanuel Corbito.
Presiding Judge Thelma Bunyi Medina of the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 18 said granting Lacson’s motion would further delay the case, which is nearly a decade old.
“A reinvestigation at this point will accomplish nothing,” read the court’s decision.
Medina said “the better course of action to take is to await the decision of the appellate court in the said petition rather than to order a reinvestigation of this case,” read the decision.
She said if the Court of Appeals renders a decision favorable to Lacson, a lower court decision with regards to the reinvestigation would become moot.
Last Aug. 12, Lacson asked the court to take a second look at its July 23, 2010 order denying his motion for reinvestigation.
He also filed a supplemental motion for reinvestigation on Aug. 16, 2010.
