MANILA, Philippines - Eight persons have been arrested by agents of the National Bureau of Investigation for operating the illegal numbers game jueteng in Taguig City.
The arrest of the gambling operators have proven that jueteng is active once again in the southern part of the metropolis, according to NBI sources.
The raid was conducted in Signal Village in Taguig City where jueteng paraphernalia and cash bets were seized.
Three of those arrested were released for lack of “evidence,” according to sources, while five were charged with violation of the anti-gambling law.
There were reports that the same set of suspects were arrested by the police last week but were subsequently released when a certain “PO2 Laurel” of Camp Crame allegedly interceded, according to sources.
The operation of jueteng in Taguig is reportedly financed by a certain “Dado” and “Alan” who allegedly also operate in the cities of Makati, Parañaque and Muntinlupa. The two reportedly have put up “goodwill money” for police and local officials for their unhampered operations.
Philippine National Police chief Director General Raul Bacalzo has issued a “one-strike” policy against police chiefs who will be immediately relieved from their posts if there are jueteng operations in their areas of jurisdiction.
