Phivolcs records 11 volcanic quakes in Bulusan

By Evelyn Macairan (The Philippine Star) Updated November 28, 2010

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) yesterday said that the Bulusan volcano registered 11 volcanic quakes during the past 24 hours and one of them was classified as an explosion-type earthquake.

According to the latest Phivolcs bulletin, the explosion-type earthquake occurred at 7:27 p.m. Friday, and lasted for 11 minutes. Clouds hampered their view of the volcano’s summit. This was not the first time that they monitored an explosion-type earthquake.

But despite the shaking, Phivolcs said, “no rumbling sound was heard and no ashfall was observed at areas beyond four kilometers from the crater. Sulfur dioxide emission rate was measured at 13 tons a day.”

The agency maintained an alert level 1 over Bulusan Volcano
.

They also reiterated their advice to the public not to enter the four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone (PDZ) since there is still the risk of sudden steam and ash explosion.

Considering the direction of the wind, they also asked the public who are living in the northwest and southwest sectors of the volcano to take the necessary precaution against ashfalls.

Phivolcs added that, “the residents near valleys and river/stream channels should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahar in the event of heavy and continuous rain-fall.”

Civil aviation authorities were instructed to warn their pilots not to fly too close to the volcano’s summit since there is a possibility that it would emit ash and volcanic fragments and this would be dangerous to the aircrafts.

Meanwhile, Bulusan’s only eruption accompanied by lahar materials was in 1918 to 1919.       – With Cet Dematera
