Tank not source of Makati condo gas leak - probers

By Jose Rodel Clapano (The Philippine Star) Updated October 28, 2010

MANILA, Philippines
– The gas leak in West Tower Condomnium could not have come from a fuel tank buried in Barangay Bangkal, the Makati City government said yesterday.

A task force headed by Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. said that a team of geologists and hydrologists from the University of the Philippines did not find any fuel tank or metallic object after drilling three exploratory holes beside the West Tower over the weekend.

It is also processing over 20 exploratory wells close to the pipelines owned by the First Philippines Industry Corp. (FPIC), which delivers processed and unprocessed oil products from Batangas to the oil depot in Pandacan, Manila.

Joey Salgado, Makati Information and Community Relations Department director, said the FPIC is scheduled to start excavation on its pipeline today from 2 a.m. to 7 p.m. to trace the source of the gas leak.

FPIC will also start concrete breaking at 2 a.m., and soil excavation at around 6 a.m. today, he added.

The Makati Engineering Office has approved FPIC’s request to do excavation work in Barangay Bangkal.

Authorities have siphoned off more than 200,000 liters of diesel, gasoline, kerosene and aviation fuel from the basement of West Tower.
