MANILA, Philippines - Malacañan has expressed pleasure at Makati Regional Trial Court Judge Oscar Pimentel for delaying a decision on the cases filed against Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and other Magdalo soldiers.
This is in view of the pending concurrence by Congress with President Aquino's amnesty proclamation for soldiers who rebelled against the previous Arroyo administration.
Trillanes participated in the 2003 Oakwood mutiny and the 2007 Manila Peninsula siege.
In a press conference, Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said: “I wasn't able to read the entire order, [but] from what I picked up, it’s based on judicial courtesy. We welcome that knowing the Palace is waiting for concurrence from Congress. It's an act of courtesy from Judge Pimentel, who was my teacher in law school."
In a resolution on Wednesday, Pimentel gave due notice to the amnesty order issued by Malacañang. He was already supposed to rule on the case today. Instead, he reset it to December 16 at 8:30 a.m.
President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III signed more than 2 weeks ago the proclamation granting amnesty to Trillanes and other soldiers involved in the Oakwood, the Marine standoff in February 2006, and the Manila Peninsula siege in November 2007.
The proclamation needs concurrence from both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Lawyer Reynaldo Robles, counsel for Trillanes, had said: “The judge considered the fact that Congress is acting on the amnesty…I don’t think, however, that this [recognition] will affect his judgment.”
