MANILA, Philippines - The Alpha Phi Omega or APO fraternity welcomed on Thursday the filing of charges by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) against one of its members Anthony Leal Nepomuceno.

"It's okay with us that the charge has been filed. At least [Nepomuceno] can now defend himself in the proper forum. And the justice that everyone is seeking will finally be attained," APO president Mel Adriano told ABS-CBN News.

The NBI has filed multiple frustrated murder and multiple attempted murder charges against Nepomuceno, saying that they have strong statements from witnesses positively identifying the APO member as the one who threw the grenade that injured more than 40 people, and severed both legs of law student Raissa Laurel.

Nepomuceno's lawyers and APO fraternity members have also expressed utmost confidence that it was not their “brod” who caused the blast.

"We are morally convinced of his innocence," says Atty. Felix Marinas. "The way this kid was brought up by his parents does not fit the profile of someone who would do such an act. His parents did all that they could, just so he could finish school."

Nepomuceno is a native of Mogpog, Marinduque.
